Are you going to move or just clean out the basement or attic? Sturdy boxes are always a good choice-who knows how long your items might be in them.
-
Bubble wrap (sold at Sam’s Club and elsewhere) comes in 12” by 240’ and allows you to somewhat see what’s inside & good for fragile items. And mark that box “FRAGILE”.
-
Always label the boxes as to their contents-it sure saves digging through them. And label more than just 1 side of a box, that 1 side might just be the one facing the back (when your kids brought your things to storage).
-
Fill unused portions of boxes with packing paper to provide more support. Don’t make the boxes too heavy or just heavy on 1 side.
-
You might consider using a shelf if you have one available-for books, records etc. But please do not attach anything to the walls.
-
Appliances must be properly prepared for storage-refrigerators, washing machines etc. (check with appliance store or manufacturer). And, consider wiping them with baking soda to keep them dry as possible.
-
If you do disassemble furniture, electrical items etc., put all loose parts such as screws, nuts and bolts in a Ziploc bag and attach to the piece.
-
Leather items can be tricky - use a conditioner before storing
-
Wood furniture might do well with a coat of furniture polish
-
If you’ve ever watched a professional mover you will notice they have very inventive ways of packing and storing. Couches might go on their sides (they take up a lot of space when normally placed), dresser drawers have delicate items stored inside, pillows and blankets can be placed inside washers and dryers. You can probably think of a number of other space saving things as well.

Lastly, consider making up a diagram of your unit showing where items are kept. Keep a copy on a clipboard and place in the front of the unit. Take the original home with you though.
