Tips For Utilizing Storage Space Effectively
PLAN FOR YOUR SPACE
  1. Use sturdy boxes for heavy, less used items-they will probably be at the back & bottom of stacked cartons.
  2. Give yourself an aisle to get to the back of your unit (down the center is usually best).
  3. Store frequently used items at the front of unit.
  4. Don’t hesitate to ask us for a pallet if you’d like to store something off the concrete-we have plenty of them.  We haven’t found them necessary for our things but you might.
PACKING  &  STORING YOUR THINGS
  1. Are you going to move or just clean out the basement or attic?  Sturdy boxes are always a good choice-who knows how long your items might be in them.
  2. Bubble wrap (sold at Sam’s Club and elsewhere) comes in 12” by 240’ and allows you to somewhat see what’s inside & good for fragile items. And mark that box “FRAGILE”.
  3. Always label the boxes as to their contents-it sure saves digging through them.  And label more than just 1 side of a box, that 1 side might just be the one facing the back (when your kids brought your things to storage).
  4. Fill unused portions of boxes with packing paper to provide more support.  Don’t make the boxes too heavy or just heavy on 1 side.
  5. You might consider using a shelf if you have one available-for books, records etc.  But please do not attach anything to the walls.
  6. Appliances must be properly prepared for storage-refrigerators, washing machines etc. (check with appliance store or manufacturer).  And, consider wiping them with baking soda to keep them dry as possible.
  7. If you do disassemble furniture, electrical items etc., put all loose parts such as screws, nuts and bolts in a Ziploc bag and attach to the piece.
  8. Leather items can be tricky - use a conditioner before storing
  9. Wood furniture might do well with a coat of furniture polish
  10. If you’ve ever watched a professional mover you will notice they have very inventive ways of packing and storing.  Couches might go on their sides (they take up a lot of space when normally placed), dresser drawers have delicate items stored inside, pillows and blankets can be placed inside washers and dryers.  You can probably think of a number of other space saving things as well.
  11. Lastly, consider making up a diagram of your unit showing where items are kept.  Keep a copy on a clipboard and place in the front of the unit.  Take the original home with you though.
